Frequently Asked Questions About the Barcode Generator

What does the barcode generator do?

The barcode generator converts the number or data you enter into a downloadable barcode image using the selected barcode format, scale, height and display settings.

Is the barcode generator free?

Yes. The barcode generator is free to use and does not require an account or login.

What barcode formats does the tool support?

The tool supports a range of linear and two-dimensional barcode formats, including ITF-14, Code 128, EAN-13, UPC-A, GS1-128, QR Code and Data Matrix. The available options are shown in the barcode type selector.

What is the difference between a linear and a 2D barcode?

Linear barcodes store information across a sequence of vertical bars and generally contain a shorter identifier. Two-dimensional barcodes such as QR Code and Data Matrix can store more information within a compact square or rectangular symbol.

Can I generate barcodes for retail products?

Yes. Supported retail barcode formats include EAN-13 and UPC-A. You must enter a valid product identifier assigned for your business and market.

Can I generate barcodes for cartons?

Yes. ITF-14 and other supported formats can be used for outer cartons and logistics units where appropriate. The correct format depends on the identifier, packaging level and requirements of the businesses receiving the product.

Can I generate barcodes for internal inventory?

Yes. Formats such as Code 128 can be used to encode internally assigned product, location, batch or asset references. Internal codes should be managed consistently so each barcode identifies the intended record.

Can the tool create GS1 barcodes?

The tool can generate supported GS1 barcode symbologies from the identifier or structured data you enter. It does not issue GS1 company prefixes, GTINs or other identifiers.

Do I need a GS1 account to generate a barcode?

You do not need a GS1 account to use the generator. However, businesses using GS1 identifiers for commercial products generally need valid numbers allocated through the appropriate GS1 member organisation or trading arrangement.

Does the barcode generator assign GTINs?

No. The generator creates an image from the data entered. It does not allocate GTINs, company prefixes or other globally unique product identifiers.

What is a GTIN?

A Global Trade Item Number, or GTIN, is a unique identifier used for trade items. Depending on the packaging level and barcode format, a GTIN may contain 8, 12, 13 or 14 digits.

What is an EAN-13 barcode?

EAN-13 is a 13-digit retail barcode commonly used on consumer products. The barcode encodes a valid GTIN-13, including its check digit.

What is a UPC-A barcode?

UPC-A is a 12-digit retail barcode commonly used in North America. It encodes a valid GTIN-12, including its check digit.

What is an ITF-14 barcode?

ITF-14 is a linear barcode commonly used to encode a 14-digit trade item number on outer packaging such as cartons and cases.

What is a Code 128 barcode?

Code 128 is a compact linear barcode that can encode numbers, letters and other supported characters. It is commonly used for logistics, warehouse labels and internal tracking.

What is a GS1-128 barcode?

GS1-128 uses the Code 128 symbology with GS1 formatting rules and Application Identifiers. It can encode information such as product identifiers, batch numbers, expiry dates and logistics-unit references.

What is a Data Matrix barcode?

Data Matrix is a two-dimensional barcode capable of storing more information in a compact area than most linear barcodes. GS1 DataMatrix can be used for structured product and traceability data where supported by the receiving system.

Can I include batch numbers and expiry dates?

Yes. Supported GS1 barcode formats can encode batch and expiry information using correctly structured GS1 Application Identifiers. The receiving scanner or system must also support and interpret that data.

What are GS1 Application Identifiers?

GS1 Application Identifiers define the meaning and format of each piece of data encoded within a GS1 barcode. Examples include identifiers for a GTIN, batch or lot number, expiry date and serial number.

Does the tool calculate barcode check digits?

The generator may validate or calculate check digits for supported barcode types where the selected format permits it. You should still confirm that the underlying identifier is valid and correctly assigned before using the barcode commercially.

Why is my barcode not generating?

The entered data may not match the length, character or check-digit requirements of the selected barcode type. Confirm that the value is valid for that format and remove unsupported spaces or characters.

Can I display the barcode number beneath the bars?

Yes. Use the human-readable text option to choose whether the encoded value is displayed beneath supported linear barcodes.

What does barcode scale control?

Scale changes the rendered size and resolution of the barcode. Increasing the scale generally creates a wider image with more pixels, which can be useful for larger labels or higher-resolution printing.

What does barcode height control?

Height adjusts the vertical size of supported linear barcodes. It does not change the information encoded in the symbol.

Can I download the barcode?

Yes. Generated barcodes can be downloaded in the supported file formats available within the generator.

Should I download the barcode as PNG or SVG?

PNG is convenient for documents, websites and basic printing. SVG is a scalable vector format that can be resized without losing sharpness, making it better suited to many packaging and professional design workflows.

Can I use the generated barcode on product packaging?

Yes, provided the encoded identifier is valid, the selected barcode format is appropriate and the final printed symbol meets the size, contrast, quiet-zone and print-quality requirements of the relevant retailer, trading partner or standard.

Will every scanner read the generated barcode?

Not necessarily. Scanner compatibility depends on the barcode format, encoded data, print size, contrast, resolution, surface, scanning distance and the scanner configuration. Test the final printed barcode using the equipment and workflow in which it will be used.

Why does a barcode need clear space around it?

Barcodes require blank space around the symbol, commonly called a quiet zone, so scanners can distinguish the barcode from nearby text, borders and graphics.

Does generating a barcode guarantee that it will scan correctly?

No. Successful scanning also depends on the validity of the encoded data, final print dimensions, quiet zones, colour contrast, printer quality, packaging material and scanner compatibility.

Should I test the barcode before printing packaging?

Yes. Test the barcode at its final printed size and on the intended packaging material before committing to a full production run. Where commercial compliance is required, arrange appropriate barcode verification.

Is the barcode data stored or shared?

No. Barcode generation is completed locally within your browser, and the values entered into the generator are not sent to Supply'd servers.

Can Supply'd ERP generate product and logistics labels?

Yes. Supply'd ERP can generate product, batch, carton and logistics labels using connected product, inventory, production and order information.

Can Supply'd ERP scan barcodes during operations?

Yes. Supply'd ERP supports compatible barcode scanners across receiving, stock movements, stocktakes, production, picking, packing, dispatch and delivery workflows.
